David Almond has written many tremendous books for young adults and children. His writing is full of warmth, humour and magic; it has a rare lasting poignancy. In 2010 David won the Hans Christian Anderson Award for his contribution to children’s fiction. In 2015 David won the Guardian Children’s fiction prize for his novel A Song For Ella Grey.
I have illustrated two of David’s Stories My Dad’s a Birdman and The Boy Who Climbed into The Moon.
My Dad’s a Birdman started of as a play for The Young Vick Theatre and then became a book before being adapted for stage again. David and I donated our work on My Dad’s a Birdman to Seven Stories, Newcastle. In their archive they have David’s hand written drafts, my rough sketches and the final book artwork. This work has recently been included in the book Drawn From the Archive.
